Jordan Loyd, Crvena Zvezda crush ASVEL Villeurbanne in EuroLeague Round 4 makeup game
Jordan Loyd was unstoppable offensively and helped Crvena Zvezda dominate ASVEL Villeurbanne on the road in a EuroLeague Round 4 game (68-89).
The match was set to take place four weeks ago, on October 16. Yet, the EuroLeague suspended it, as Villeurbanne was dealing with several positive coronavirus cases.
On Wednesday night, the two teams finally met and the Serbians cruised to the triumph.
After a close game in the first half (38-44), the visitors took over in the third quarter.
Thanks to an 0-11 run, they claimed a double-digit lead and never looked back. The French team never recovered after that, suffering its fourth defeat in five EuroLeague games.
Loyd, who is the leading scorer of the EuroLeague, made another stellar performance with 29 points and five steals.
“Everybody stepped up, everybody did a hell of a job and made the outcome a lot easier. It’s not about the points for me.
I’m not really worried about the points. We needed to answer on defense and we did, and I’m happy about that,” Loyd told reporters afterwards.
Zvezda head coach Sasa Obradovic saw all 11 players of his team score and contribute to a big road win.
On the other hand, Allerik Freeman paced ASVEL with 14 points, but could not help his team avoid another EuroLeague defeat.
It is worth noting that the visitors got plenty of help from their bench, as Zvezda’s reserves outscored ASVEL one’s 40-26 in the contest.
The Serbians improved to 3-4, while ASVEL dropped to 1-4 in the EuroLeague standings.
The French team saw the competition suspend another two games, due to the pandemic, and still has to play them.
Both teams now have their sights set on their next games. EuroLeague Round 8 will see Zvezda take on Real Madrid in Belgrade.
At the same time, ASVEL Villeurbanne will host Zenit Saint Petersburg. Both games will take place on Friday (13/11).
