Indiana Fever vs. Connecticut Sun – In-Season Stats & Betting Trends

Can The Fever Extend Their Winning Streak To Two Games?

Indiana Fever Season Stats:

  • Scoring Offense: 78.0 PPG – 9TH
  • Offensive Rating: 98.5 Points Per 100 Possessions – 8TH
  • Scoring Defense: 89.8 PPG – 12TH
  • Defensive Rating: 113.5 Points Per 100 Possessions – 12TH

The Indiana Fever had dropped nine of their first 11 games heading into their matchup against the Washington Mystics last Friday night. Not only that, but they also played 11 games in a 20-day span. Not the ideal way to start the season by any means.

In that contest, Caitlin Clark led the team’s scoring attack with 30 points on 8-for-15 shooting overall and an impressive 7-for-13 from beyond the arc. She also tallied eight rebounds, six assists and four steals in what was probably the best all-around performance of her young WNBA career.

Kelsey Mitchell added 16 points, four rebounds, and three steals, while Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith scored 10 points each. As fan interest in Clark continues, the Mystics hosted this contest at Capital One Arena instead of the stadium they usually play at home. The sellout crowd of 20,033 was the highest attendance for a game since 2007.

The Sun Looking To Bounce Back From First Loss Of The Season

Connecticut Sun Season Stats:

  • Scoring Offense: 79.7 PPG – 6TH
  • Offensive Rating: 104.4 Points Per 100 Possessions – 3RD
  • Scoring Defense: 70.6 PPG – 1ST
  • Defensive Rating: 92.5 Points Per 100 Possessions – 1ST

Meanwhile, the Connecticut Sun had posted wins in each of their first nine games. Unfortunately, that streak ended with an 82-75 loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday night.

Both teams overcame early double-digit deficits and battled to a 39-39 stalemate at the break. Fast forwarding to the fourth quarter, Connecticut trailed 76-72 before Tyasha Harris knocked down a three-pointer, to cut the deficit to 76-75 with 90 seconds left to play in regulation. New York responded with five consecutive points, courtesy of a 3-pointer from Jonquel Jones and a basket by Sabrina Ionescu, pushing the lead back to 81-75.

Connecticut placed six players in double figures in this contest. DeWanna Bonner scored a team-high 16 points to go along with eight rebounds and three assists.

Brionna Jones added 13 points and four rebounds, while Dijonai Carrington contributed 12 points and four rebounds. Despite the Sun’s recent setback against New York, look for the league’s top-ranked defensive team to get back into the win column against a Fever squad that is ranked last in both scoring defense and defensive efficiency.

Now that we have set the stage for this Eastern Conference showdown, let’s examine the betting trends for both sides.

The Picks

The Spread

On the heels of their 82-75 loss to New York, the Sun come into this match as an 11-point favorite (per OddShark.com). Here is a look at how both teams have fared against the spread this season.

  • The Sun are 3-6 ATS in their last nine outings.
  • Connecticut is 2-4 ATS in their last six home games.

Over/Under

The projected over/under total for this matchup opened at 159 points (per 365scores.com). Here is why going with the “under” is the smart choice.

  • The total has gone UNDER four times in the Sun’s last five games
  • The UNDER total is 4-2 in New York’s last six contests against Indiana.
  • The total has gone UNDER four times in the Fever’s last six matchups against Connecticut.
  • In Indiana’s last seven road matchups against Connecticut, the UNDER total has prevailed five times.

Prediction: UNDER 159 points

Player Prop Bets

Caitlin Clark bounced back from a pair of poor performances by equaling her season-high of 30 points against the Mystics, thus making her the key player to watch for the road team. She currently has -115 odds of scoring more than 19.5 points and -115 odds of finishing with less than 19.5 points.

Here is a look at how her numbers stack up against the projected points total for this matchup.

  • On the season, Clark is averaging 16.8 points per contest.
  • The rookie guard has played against Eastern Conference teams seven times this season. In those contests, she has averaged 16.0 points per game.
  • In seven road games this season, she is averaging 16.4 points per contest.
  • Clark has suited up against the Sun twice this season. She has averaged 18.5 points per contest.
  • Over her last five outings, she is averaging 18.8 points, 6.4 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per outing, exceeding the points total for this matchup three times during that stretch.

Prediction: Caitlin Clark UNDER 19.5 points

On the other side of this matchup, DeWanna Bonner is the key player to watch for the Connecticut Sun. She currently has +100 odds of scoring more than 19.5 points and -130 odds of finishing with less than 19.5 points.

Do Bonner’s numbers favorably compare to the points total for this contest? Let’s look at the tale of the tape to find out.

  • On the season, Bonner is averaging 18.8 points per contest.
  • Bonner has played against Eastern Conference opponents seven times this season. She has averaged 19.6 PPG.
  • In seven home games, Bonner is averaging 18.4 points per outing.
  • Bonner has averaged 21.0 points per outing in two games against Indiana this season.
  • Across her last five outings, Bonner is averaging 17.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per contest, exceeding the points total for this matchup just once during that stretch.

While most of the trends point to the “under” for Bonner, look for her to have a solid outing against a Fever squad that does not excel at the defensive end of the floor.

Prediction: DeWanna Bonner OVER 19.5 points
