Zenit Saint-Petersburg extends road win streak in the EuroLeague to four games
Zenit Saint Petersburg rallied past Baskonia on the road in a rescheduled EuroLeague Round 3 game (70-77).
Even though the Russians led by six at halftime (28-34), the Basques turned things around in the third quarter.
However, the hosts could not take control of the game, with consecutive lead changes taking place.
The visitors, though, exploded in the fourth quarter and went on a 2-15 run, taking a 17-point lead with five minutes to go.
Baskonia never recovered after that and Zenit earned a crucial EuroLeague win away from home.
Arturas Gudaitis (13 points and seven rebounds) and Alex Poythress (14 points) combined for 27 points for the winners.
Meanwhile, Kevin Pangos flirted with the double-double (nine points, 10 assists).
On the other hand, Rokas Giedraitis was the top scorer of Baskonia with 15.
Thanks to this win, Zenit now is at 5-2 in the EuroLeague standings, whereas Baskonia dropped to 4-5.
Both teams will play on the road this week, with Baskonia facing Olympiacos in Piraeus and Zenit taking on Zalgiris in Kaunas.
Zenit is now a perfect 4-0 on the road, while no other team in the EuroLeague is unbeaten away from home.
The two teams still have more EuroLeague games to play, which were suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
More specifically, the Russians have another three rescheduled games and the Basques one, respectively. EuroLeague has scheduled the games for December and January.
As Zenit coach Xavi Pascual said after the game, the squad had to deal with a very difficult situation during the pademic.
The Catalan coach said 22-23 members of the team tested positive for the coronavirus and Zenit was unable to practice for almost a month.
Therefore, the Russians are now trying to return to form, yet they have a very difficult schedule ahead, with consecutive games in the EuroLeague and the VTB League.
