Virtus Roma withdraws from Italian Serie A
The Italian Serie A is turned upside down after Virtus Roma announced the withdrawal from the championship. The decision came just a few hours before the final gong, which would have seen the team’s expulsion from the League for the non-payment of the 35,000 euro Fip installment expiring on 25 November. Had it arrived by Wednesday, Virtus would have suffered a fine and a 3-point penalty in the standings, but the patron Claudio Toti decided to present the team’s withdrawal by sending a letter to the LBA and the Fip.
Sixty years of history, one Champions Cup, one League Title and many top-level basketball players who dressed the tank top and walked the parquet. Six decades of passion – in every sense – swept away in one night, after a long agony and the non-payment of 35 thousand euros.
Now, Virtus Roma basketball no longer exists. At least not the company that could proudly display the seven banners that were dropped every weekend from the roof of the PalaEur.
The decision did not please the Federation and highlighted “the severe damage to the image caused not only to the championship but also and above all to the entire movement, which in this difficult moment is living off the sacrifices and seriousness of hundreds of companies throughout the territory. As per procedure, the same FIP will send all the documents to the Sports Judge so that he can take the measures of competence “. The top league now remains with 15 teams.
It is clear from the above that many basketball leagues and clubs are in a desperate fiancial situation. A few weeks ago a similar situation played out in the Adriatic League and in the Serbian league.
