VEF Riga are three-time Latvian champs!
Latvian basketball has now officially entered a “VEF Riga Dynasty” as the team has now won its third-straight Latvian League Championship. VEF Riga defeated BK Ventspils 100-81 in Game 5 of the finals. Even though they finished the regular season third overall, they pushed hard in the post-season and made it all the way through the gauntlet.
VEF Riga came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, took an early 10-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They kept their advantage up to halftime, exploded for 27 after the break and never let BK Ventspils come into striking distance to threaten for the win. They were led by Will Daniels (203 cm, Rhode Island’08) who came away with 19 points, while Darius Bertans (192 cm) added 18 markers of his own. Earl Rowland (188 cm, St. Mary’s California’05) and Kristaps Janicenoks (196 cm) chipped in 16 points apiece.
BK Ventspils were just outgunned in this game. They did have a pair of players who managed to make an impact. American import Folarin Campbell (192 cm, George Mason’08) scored 15 points and Arturs Berzins (204 cm) contributed 14 points in the losing effort.
