Turkish Airlines EuroLeague: Bayern Muenchen Sets Records
The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague opened Round 6 of the 2018-19 regular season with four games on Thursday. CSKA Moscow (6-0) kept their pristine record intact with an impressive win over a fellow top-4 team Armani Milano, 85-90. Spanish Powerhouse Real Madrid (6-0) crushed Maccabi Tel Aviv in a 66-87 blowout victory. They are the last two remaining teams in the competition to avoid a mark in the loss column.
Those wins were laudable indeed, however, the biggest blowout win of the round so far was dealt by FC Bayern Muenchen as they completely annihilated Darussafaka Istanbul 116-70. This was history in the making for Bayern Muenchen with this being their largest win ever. Devin Booker led the hosts with 18 points but it was not a one-man show, Petteri Koponen and Nihad Djedovic adding 16 points each of their own.
Turnovers were a key factor in this game as Bayern Muenchen committed just four, compared to 12 from Darussafaka. In the end, a barrage of 3-pointers rained down by the blue and red shirts kept their lead snowballing out of control.
The 46-point margin was not the only EuroLeague record set by the German organization on this fateful night. The 116 was the most points they’ve ever scored in the league, 28 were the most assists they’ve dished out as a team, and 18 is also a new club record for 3-pointers made. No other team has scored this many points in the last 10 years.
Record keepers had a busy night for sure. Bayern Muenchen rides this big game and improves to a 3-3 record. With morale also at an all-time high, expect more spirited play coming from this squad in the future.
