Top 10 Best NBA Trios in History
Greatest Trios in NBA History: Number 8
New York Knicks; Frazier, Monroe, and Reed (1973 NBA Champions)
In 1970, a hobbled Willis Reed stumbled onto the court at Madison Square Garden, causing fans in New York City to erupt with emotions. Hitting two early jump shots in the first quarter on one good leg, he gave the New York Knicks the emotional lift they needed to overcome to supremely talented Los Angeles Lakers.
However, in 1972, the Knicks were bested by those same Lakers, who featured Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, and Gail Goodrich in the NBA Finals. 1973 was the rubber match between the two ballclubs, and the New York Knicks would get their revenge and emerge as the better of the two rivals.
By 1973, Willis Reed was no longer the focal point of the team. Now the team was led by their backcourt, which featured the All-Star duo of Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Earl “The Pearl” Monroe. However, Reed was still the captain and the emotional leader of the team. This is one of the most fondly remembered Knicks teams of all time, and all three players’ jersey numbers now hang in the rafters at Madison Square Garden.
