Top 10 Best NBA Trios in History
Greatest Trios in NBA History: Number 9
Philadelphia 76ers; Erving, Malone, and Cheeks (1983 NBA Champions)
Technically speaking, the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers featured four All-Stars. Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Maurice Cheeks, and Andrew Toney were all selected to the Eastern Conference All-Star team that season. However, Erving, Malone, and Cheeks are getting the nod here because all three of them eventually made their way into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame.
This is one of the most fondly remembered teams in NBA history. Led by Julius “The Doctor” Erving, the Sixers made it all the way to the Finals in 1977, 1980, and 1982. Unfortunately, they were beaten by the Portland Trailblazers once and the Los Angeles Lakers twice. However, the off-season acquisition of superstar Center Moses Malone changed everything in the summer of 1982.
In 1983 “Big Mo” would not be denied, as he was the league’s best player and the 1983 Regular Season MVP. His prediction that the team would go undefeated in all three rounds almost came true as he famously proclaimed “fo’ fo’ fo’,” short for four, four, four, the number of games he expected each round to take. The season was capped off with an emphatic sweep of the Lakers in the 1983 NBA Finals. The Sixers were once again champions, and Dr. J had finally captured that elusive World Championship he so desperately sought after.
