The Cañeros move on to the semi-finals
Eloy Vargas played the best game of his life with a three-point shooting percentage of 44. The Cañeros, from the Dominican Republic, scored 31 points in the third quarter to triumph over the Leones (Lions) of Santo Domingo in the southeast circuit of the Scotiabank League.
This victory granted the Cañeros their classification for the semi-finals with 11 victories to 9 losses, quite a change from the last time around when they won only three games. The Titanes del Licey also will be in the semi-finals.
The Leones have been totally eliminated from the tournament just one year after winning it. The Cocolos are out as well.
Vargas (graduate of Kentucky University), the key player of the game, is a power forward (2,11m). He scored 23 points and made 12 rebounds before fouling out. His teammate Luis Martínez trailed him with 21 points. Maurice Baker with 17. Martínez and Baker shot eleven 3-pointers, greatly helping the team in its defeat of the Leones.
The team is pumped up and happy about the change that has taken place in just one year. They will bring their A-game to the semi-finals.
