Szolnoki Olaj retains Hungarian league title
Szolnoki Olaj KK retained the Hungarian Basketball top flight title after winning the A Division thanks to a 66-55 home win over KTE-Duna Aszfalt. The clubs clashed in Game 3 of the finals series with Duna Aszfalt trying to avoid a whitewash. The visitors could not stop Szolnoki Olaj though and the defending champs cruised to a second consecutive A Division title after a sweep of the finals series.
It was Szolnoki’s sixth top flight crown overall, making the club the fourth winningest in Hungarian Basketball history. The club is enjoying a dominant spell in the country, claiming its fourth league title in five seasons.
The hosts have not looked likely to relinquish their vaunted title as champions and cruised through the series and indeed the first quarter here, winning the opening ten minutes 20-13. Szolnoki controlled the game in the second quarter and extended its lead with a 17-15 run that made it 37-28 through the long break. There was an evident gulf in class and in the third period the home team extended by another two points to lead by 11 heading into the fourth. Szolnoki Olaj held its lead through the fourth act to ease down the stretch and to another championship.
David Vojvoda topped the score charts with 19 points in the winning effort, while Strahinja Milosevic logged 15 points.
Marko Derasimovic was the only player to register double figures for the losing team, he claimed 14 points for Duna Aszfalt.
