Strasbourg advances to Basketball Champions League quarter-finals
After trailing by as many as 19 points, Hungaria team Falco Szombathely fought back to force overtime, only to lose by double figures, 98-86, to French team SIG Strasbourg, eliminating them from advancing to the Quarter-Finals.
Strasbourg has now won six games in overtime, the most of any team in the BCL. They have played eight overtime games, also the most by any team in league history.
Strasbourg has also now scored 90+ points in four different games this season, tied for the most by them in a single BCL campaign, as they also did it in four games last season.
Turning point: Strasbourg scored 24 points in the first quarter and knocked down 6-of-8 threes, jumping out to a 24-16 lead heading to the second. Strasbourg continued their hot shooting and led 49-38 at halftime, with 33 of their points coming from beyond the arc (11-of-20 3P).
Strasbourg is now 3-2 in Group L, and the French club will travel to face Lenovo Tenerife (4-0) in their last Round of 16 group play game on Wednesday, March 23.
If Tenerife beats Rytas Vilnius tomorrow on March 15, then Tenerife and Strasbourg will advance to the Quarter-Finals as the top two teams from the group.
Szombathely is now 0-5 in the group and is eliminated from the competition. The Hungarian club will finish their 2021-22 BCL season when they host Rytas Vilnius (2-2) in their last Round of 16 group play game on Wednesday, March 23.
