Stephon Marbury takes up coaching
Former NBA star Stephon Marbury (188 cm, Georgia Tech’96) is set to continue his Chinese adventure during the summer, not as a player but as a coach. The veteran American point guard has been playing the last two seasons with the Beijing Ducks and has announced he will stay on for the 2013 China National Games as an assistant coach for the Beijing franchise.
Marbury has been in China since leaving the Boston Celtics in 2010 to join with Shanxi Zhongyu in the CBA. The American played a year with Zhongyu for a year before leaving to join the Beijing Ducks where he has played the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons. Of course, fans of the NBA will remember Stephon Marbury from his days has a shining light in the National Basketball Association.
During a glittering career Marbury became known as an enigmatic and immensely talented presence on the court. The player’s vision, skill, and scoring ability helped him to a 14 year NBA career where he played with the Minnesota Timberwolves, New Jersey Nets, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, and the Boston Celtics.
During this season with the Beijing Ducks Marbury has played 36 games and has posted staggering averages of 28.3ppg, 4.4rpg, and 5.8apg. Marbury said during an interview with BTV that his adventure in China is not over yet and that he will once again join up with the Ducks, but this time as assistant coach as the team prepares for the China National Games, the provincial Olympic style games that occur in China every four years.
While the actual games and Basketball tournament will take place in August, there is a preliminary qualifying round in June. Marbury did not confirm whether he would remain with the Beijing Ducks as a player, or whether he would be with the franchise heading into next season.
