Spurs Win 2015 Las Vegas Summer League
The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Phoenix Suns 93-90 to win the 2015 Las Vegas Summer League title. It was a fitting and fruitful end to an event that showcased some of the league’s new, young talent. Fans and coaching staffs alike were treated to some insight in what will invariably be the future stars of the game.
The Spurs bounced back after losing their opening game to the New York Knicks and strung together six wins to climb to the top. Jonathon Simmons was awarded the game’s Most Valuable Player award, after scoring 23 points to lead the Spurs to victory. His teammate Treveon Graham chipped in 22 points of his own.
History was made by Spurs’ coaching assistant Becky Hammon, who coached her club’s young crop over the course of two weeks and change. She became the first-ever woman coach to win a Summer League title. Hammon has been an inspiring pioneer for women in the sport and this becomes another feather for her cap.
“It was a grind,” Hammon said. “They’ve been together for 17 days. They really started to jell the last two or three games. They listened, and they played really hard for me. I just really appreciate their attentiveness and alertness. They were tired, but they fought through.”
