Spanish ACB: Top Teams Bag Wins to Close 2017
There was a bit of a shake-up in the Spanish ACB standings at the end of Round 14. While some favorites bagged wins, there was a fair share of upsets to close out 2017. The league served up a 4-game slate on December 31st. Real Madrid widened their lead over the rest of the league, surging to a 12-1 record after downing Estudiantes Madrid 96-89.
Real Madrid’s eternal rivals, FC Barcelona upset Montakit Fuenlabrada with a huge blowout win, 101-74. The loss sent Fuenlabrada (10-4) falling down a spot to third place in the standings, opening up a window for Valencia Basket (10-3) to grab second place. Despite the win, Barca stands firm in fourth place with 9-4.
Thomas Heurtel led all Barcelona scorers with 15 points and seven assists. American big man, Kevin Seraphin chipped in 13 points off the bench. Francisco Cruz paced Fuenlabrada with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.
UCAM Murcia evened out their record at 7-7 after edging out Baskonia 78-67. The win allowed them to climb up to ninth place, while Baskonia (8-5) keeps their ownership of the fifth place.
In the fourth game played on December 31st, Real Betis dropped CAI Zaragoza 70-67.
