Sixers Engage in Trade Discussions Around Tobias Harris
The Philadelphia 76ers are already in trade discussions centering around veteran forward Tobias Harris.
Sixers Start Trade Discussions on Tobias Harris
Tobias Harris may soon be on his way out of the City of Brotherly Love. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Philadelphia 76ers are now engaging in trade discussions with other teams regarding the availability of Harris. Players who inked contracts last summer are eligible for trades beginning December 15, so look for the Sixers’ front office to ramp up Harris trade talks even before that date.
Tobias Harris has been with the Sixers since the 2018-19 NBA season. He has been a reliable scoring punch for the team, joining forces with superstar big man Joel Embiid to push Philly to the playoffs year after year. However, the arrival of James Harden and the emergence of young star Tyrese Maxey have diminished Harris’s role with the Sixers. Through 14 games this season, the veteran combo forward is only putting up a stat line of 14.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.6 steals — easily his least productive numbers since his early years in the NBA.
Even though his role has diminished, the Sixers will need more of him in the foreseeable future. It was recently reported that Maxey is going to miss three to four weeks due to a foot injury, not to mention that Harden is also sitting out due to his own foot injury. If Harris remains healthy during that span, there’s no doubt that he’ll see a bigger share in shot attempts.
At 30 years of age, Harris still has a number of productive years left in his basketball career. He is an adept inside-outside scorer and he’s not a slouch on the defensive end, either. He could definitely help a contender reach their goals this season, whether it is through a starter role or him coming off the bench. Harris is currently on a five-year, $180 million contract that will expire in the summer of 2024.
