Serbia to send an official letter to host the Final tournament of the EuroLeague
Serbia will send an official letter to the EuroLeague to host the Final tournament of the competition.
The Serbian government released a statement and stated they can guarantee the entry of all participants of the Final tournament.
“At today’s session, the Government of Serbia agreed to send a letter to the organization Euroleague Basketball, which guarantees entry for the participants of the finals of the 2019/2020 season in the Republic of Serbia.
The City of Belgrade, with the support of the President of the Republic of Serbia, officially bid for the organization of the Euroleague final, which will be held from July 4 to 26 this year.
The organization of the largest basketball club competition in Europe would be a great part for the Republic of Serbia and a great touristic incentive, having in mind that this branch of the economy is most endangered by the coronavirus epidemic,” the statement reads, via Eurohoops’ report.
If the league decides to finish the season in Serbia, the tournament will take place in Belgrade in July (4-26).
Belgrade, along with Athens, Kaunas and Cologne, are the candidates to host the remaining games.
The EuroLeague wants to conclude the season with the 18 teams playing all remaining regular-season games and then the top eight teams participating in a Final Eight tournament.
The EuroLeague will make a decision by May 24. If the season resumes, then games will be played in July (4-26).
For his part, Jordi Bertomeu talked about the criteria under which the EuroLeague is planning to resume and finish the season.
The CEO and president of the competition made it clear that games will be played only if players are 100% healthy and safe.
If everything goes according to plan, then preparation (quarantine, training sessions) will start from late May and will end on July 2.
