Real Madrid to wear sleeved jersey
Spanish giants Real Madrid will wear Basketball jerseys with sleeves from next season the club has revealed. The new style of apparel will be made by sports brand Adidas; the company has already made a sleeved jersey for NBA franchise the Golden State Warriors. The idea of sleeved jerseys was first explored by Rick Welts the now president of the Warriors nearly 30 years ago.
On that occasion the idea for a sleeved Basketball jersey was not technologically viable so Welts shelved the idea. Now over a quarter of a century later his concept has been revived with Adidas and now European giants Real Madrid will adopt the new style for next season.
The idea behind the sleeved jersey is to aid in marketing. While NBA and large European franchise jerseys sell well, the numbers are limited due to the nature of the vest style that has become synonymous with Basketball. It is hoped that a sleeved jersey will make team kits more appealing, offering an item of sports apparel that can be worn in more situations than a vest.
Football is the blueprint for what is hoped can be achieved and of course Adidas has vast experience making kits for teams such as AC Milan, Liverpool, and of course the Real Madrid soccer team. New clothing technology means that sleeved jerseys are now viable, and with one of the biggest names in the global game using the style then it could be the start of a wholesale adoption of sleeved jerseys in the sport.
