Real Madrid claims 2019 Spanish Supercup
Basketball fans were got a glorious treat on Sunday as Real Madrid downed El Clasico rivals FC Barcelona Lassa 89-79 to win the 2019 Spanish Supercup.
This is the sixth Supercup for Real Madrid. The defending Liga Endesa champions flexed their muscles against a formidable foe in Barcelona and put the league, Spanish and global fans on notice that they are ready to defend their title.
Supercups are being played across Europe as sensible and valuable warm-ups for the upcoming 2019-20 season. This tuneup game for both clubs definitely got their basketball engines revved up and roaring.
As expected both teams brought a spirited effort in a battle that had a deeper-rooted price of pride on the line, beyond the pride and glory involved in competing for and winning the Spanish Supercup. At the end of the first quarter, the game remained close as Real Madrid saw a slim 21-20 advantage at its end.
The game really opened up for the Los Blancos in the second quarter as they ramped up their game and increased their lead to 29-20 immediately. A heightened intensity in their defense was able to stifle Barcelona and keep them off their game plan. Real Madrid expanded their edge to a 48-33 lead at halftime.
Barca stormed back in the third quarter and narrowed the gap to 54-45. Real’s offense kept on going though and the score stood at 69-63 heading into the final period. Real Madrid was able to hold strong in the fourth quarter, keeping Barcelona at bay long enough to prevail and take home the 2019 Spanish Supercup trophy.
Real Madrid had a balanced and unselfish attack in this one, but it saw a notable performance from FIBA World Cup standout Facundo Campazzo, who led the team with 16 points. Brandon Davies exploded for a game-high 23 points for FC Barcelona, but unfortunately, his heroics were not enough,
“Until next time…” as they say, but for now this chapter of the never-ending El Clasico rivalry goes to Real Madrid.
