Quilmes wins Argentina Liga A Opener
The Argentinian Liga A opened up their 2014-15 season with a match from their Southern Division between two clubs from the city of Mar del Plata. The visiting squad Quilmes Mar del Plata downed Peñarol Mar del Plata 64-68. Peñarol got off to a quick start and established an early lead after the first quarter 17-13 as the teams shook off their off-season rust and got through their feeling out process. By the second period both teams got into the groove of their respective offenses and began to perform better in transition. Peñarol still managed to outscore their hosts by two points in the period and headed to the locker room with a 39-33 advantage.
Quilmes came out of the halftime break with better composure and more importantly, a more defensive mindset. They sparked a key rally to cut into Peñrol’s lead and ushered in the final intermission just down by three points. They maintained their momentum heading into the fourth and final period of the game and held the visitors to 11 points, managing to hold on for the 64-68 victory.
Baxley Walter Clay led Quilmes with 16 points and eight rebounds. Adrian Boccia Hector led Peñarol with 22 points, but did not get much help from his teammates.
