Quebradillas wins Puerto Rico BSN
Piratas de Quebradillas are the champions of Puerto Rico after emerging victorious in the BSN Finals series against Leones de Ponce. The franchise ran out comfortable winners with the score at 89-72 at the final buzzer to claim its first championship since 2006.
The series was a fitting finale to the season and rightly placed BSN regular season winners Ponce against second place Quebradillas. With the series sitting at 3-2 in favour of the Pirates, game six was all-important as Leones could tie the series while Quebradillas could win it. Sensing this was their last chance; the Ponce players sprang from the tip off the quickest, but only just, as a frenetic opening 10 minutes left the scores at 22-23 in favour of Leones de Ponce.
Ponce kept the momentum for the remainder of the first half and by the midway buzzer had stretched the lead to four points with the scoreboard reading 41-45. However, the interval helped the Pirates as the title chasing team emerged with more potency in the second period and put on a classy third quarter in which the players helped themselves to 32 points to head into the fourth quarter with a healthy 18 point cushion.
With the score at 73-55 the Pirates were in total control, although Ponce continued to fight. However it was to no avail as the Pirates had secured too deep a lead and maintained a strong points advantage throughout the last 10 minutes. The game had become a forgone conclusion and the Piratas de Quebradillas claimed the BSN championship.
