Pyrinto wins 2013-14 Finnish Championship
Pyrinto Tampere defeated Joensuun Kataja Basket 78-88 in Game 4 of the Finnish Korisliiga Finals to win the 2013-14 Championship. This Pyrinto’s third trophy for their collection. They were back-to-back champions in 2010 and 2011. This was a fitting end to their impressive season as the heavy favorites dominated the regular season with a 38-6 record.
Pyrinto shot a solid 50.9% from the field and managed to out-rebound Kataja 32-30. They distributed the ball well, finding open shots and scoring in transition. Kataja could not match their opponents shot for shot and lost their form at times thanks to Pyrinto’s defense.
Pyrinto’s wily veteran, Damon Williams took control of the game as he scored both inside and outside. He finished the game with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. His performance set the tone for his teammates to follow suit. His four triples accounted for a third of his team’s total output from beyond the three-point arc (12-23). Williams got the support he needed from Kelvin Lewis and Benjamin Raymond, who each contributed 16 points.
Pyrinto managed to overcome a 31-point explosion from Kataja’s Alex Wesby. Aside from Mike Morrison’s 15 points and Teemu Rannikko’s 11, Kataja’s bench failed to keep up the offensive momentum.
