Ploiesti wins Romanian Supercup
Reigning Romanian Liga Nationale champions CSU Asesoft Ploiesti demonstrated their dominance of Basketball in the country by winning the Supercup. The club will start the new league season on October 4th and will be on a high after defeating Energia Rovinari Targu Jiu 73-57. Ploiesti will start the 2014/2015 season looking for its 4rd title in is many years, its 11th in 12 years, and its 11th overall. As for Romanian Cup champions Rovinari, they will be hoping to have another good season, even if they could not win the Supercup.
The game was contested at Polyvalent Hall in Bucharest and got off to a great start for Asesoft Ploiesti as the Eurocup outfit raced to a 21-13 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter Targu Jiu found more consistency at both ends of the court and exchanged with the league champions throughout the frame to draw it 16 apiece. At halftime the Romanian Cup winner trailed 35-27 behind Ploiesti.
Energia Rovinari’s fight was all but finished through the third frame as CSU Asesoft Ploiesti carved out another fine frame, securing an 18-13 advantage through the period to lead 53-40 after 30 minutes of play. After the final split the league champs kept the pressure up and although Rovinari found more buckets, they could not outpace Ploiesti as the team eased to the victory.
Gerald Lee led the winning effort with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Michalis Pelekanos scored 11 points.
Louis Darby led the scoring and was in good for in the losing team, scoring 19 while pulling 8 off the glass and dishing out 5 assists.
