Patrick Ewing Returning to Georgetown to Coach
Former Georgetown legend, Patrick Ewing, is heading back to school to take over the vacant head coaching position. Ewing played at Georgetown from 1981-1985 where he was one of the most ferocious and physical big men in the country. Winner of the Big East player of the year in both his junior and senior year, as well as the National player of the year his senior year, Ewing is a historical icon at this university.
His incredible college career led him to be drafted with the number one overall pick in the 1985 draft by the New York Knicks. He lasted in the NBA lasted from 1985-2002. The league voted him into the Basketball Hall of Fame after he averaged 21.0 ppg and 9.8 rpg for his career.
Now Ewing heads back to his alumni after coaching in the NBA as an assistant since his retirement as a player. He began coaching under Jeff Van Gundy in Houston as a big man coach for Yao Ming, Rockets center. Then in 2007, Steve Van Gundy, brother of Jeff, brought in Ewing in his first year with the Orlando Magic. Ewing helped develop a young Dwight Howard in Orlando and helped Howard turn into a star in the league.
He moves to Georgetown after coaching with the Charollote Hornet since 2013. This is also his first head coaching job in his career. The position he takes over was in the hands of John Thompson III since 2004. Thompson is the son of hall of fame coach, John Thompson II who Ewing’s coach at Georgetown.
Thompson III left the team this offseason after multiple mediocre seasons at the prestigious Georgetown. The team anticipates Ewing to bring his interior offensive coaching development to the young Georgetown roster. The Hoyas have a history of having a strong center on their roster including Ewing, Alonzo Morning, Roy Hibbert and Hasheem Thabeet. Ewing will bring back what Georgetown is founded on, which is an incredibly strong interior presence on offense and defense.
