Panathinaikos defeats Olympiacos in Greek Cup
Panathinaikos basketball club had a fairly dismal 2014/2015 season, but the club already has cause to celebrate during 2015/2016 after winning the Greek Cup game. That victory came at the expense of arch rival Olympiacos Piraeus will only stir more confidence for Panathinaikos as the team looks to bury the wrongs of last season.
Played in front of an empty court as Olympiacos continues to pay the price for fan trouble, it was a subdued atmosphere, but the game still produced the goods. After a tight contest that was befitting a classic European derby ended with Panathinaikos Athens winning 64-70.
Olympiacos had the advantage through ten minutes though, winning a closely fought opening frame 14-12 for an early lead. Panathinaikos Athens edged the second stanza with a 12-16 run that made the teams equal through the long break, the scoreboard reading 26-26. The scoring stayed low as the tactical game around the perimeter made opportunities scarce, leading to the teams locking the third act 18 each. Heading into the fourth the game was tied 44-44, but Panathinaikos had another gear and as the buckets started flowing the visitors won the final period 20-26 to seal the win.
