Olympiacos Rolls Over Ifestos in Greek A1
There was only one game on tap in Round 16 of the Greek A1 League on February 3, but it was a big one. One of the biggest organizations in Greece (and Europe), Olympiacos blasted past Ifestos on the road, 53-73, to surge temporarily to the top of the league standings with a 15-1 record.
That said, their league rivals, Panathinaikos Athens take to the hardwood tonight and will attempt keep their perfect 14-0 record intact.
This was a straight up crushing by Olympiacos with them outmatching and outclassing their smaller market hosts. They started off with a 16-22 lead at the end of the first quarter. From there, the red shirts slowly but steadily padded their lead with each succeeding period.
Zach LeDay bullied Ifestos for 19 points and eight rebounds. He paced three other teammates to score in double figures. Costis Gontikas and Jerry Smith paced Ifestos with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
While Olympiacos has been able to throw its weight around in the domestic arena, they’ve had less-than-stellar results in international competition. They sit in a highly-competitive mid-pack in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, in sixth place with a 12-9 record. They have other big guns on their tails with Bayern Muenchen, Bakonia and Armani Milano just a couple of games behind.
