Olimpija Wins Liga Nova KBM Title in OT Thriller
Petrol Olimpija Ljubljana ended the 2017-18 season with a bang and claimed the 2018 Liga Nova KBM title after a thrilling 95-90 win over Krka Novo Mesto in overtime. This was a solid title defense for Olimpija. Prior to their 2017 win, the last time they were at the top of the podium was way back in 2009. The repeat performance is an encouraging sign for the club and could possibly be the start of another dynasty. They dominated the league with a hat-trick from 2004 to 2006.
The stunning game had Olimpija leading for most of the game, with Krka making a desperate push in the fourth quarter to force overtime. In the extra period, Olimpija regained control of the game and managed to end the night with the five-point margin.
Olimpija’s Jordan Morgan was near-unstoppable as he made 10-of-13 from the field and finished with a game-high 23 points. He did miss three free throw attempts but was enough of a game-changing force on offense that Krka had to take their game to the perimeter where they managed to connect on 11-of-23 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Morgan’s efforts were met in kind by Krka’s Ziga Dimec who had an impressive double-double performance with 21 points and 12 boards.
This was a welcome prize for Olimpija as the team ground it out in the regular season to finish with a league-best record. What’s next for the Slovenian champs in 2018-19? Slovenian hoops is thriving via the Liga Nova KBM and will surely bring much entertainment for its diehard fans.
