Venezia Takes Game 1 of FIBA Europe Cup Finals

 The FIBA Europe Cup Finals might be an all-Italian affair, but it does not fall short when it comes to entertaining basketball action. Game 1 of the Finals took place in Avellino, Italy. The stage was set for Sidigas Avellino to defend their home court against the visiting Umana Reyer Venezia. Unfortunately for the hosts, things did not go as planned with Venezia coming away with the upset victory, 77-69.

NBA veteran, Austin Daye hit a key 3-pointer in Venezia’s 18-9 run in the third quarter to pull away from what was initially a tightly contested first half. He proved critical to the team, making every minute on the floor count. He led the team with 14 points, which he posted in just 18 minutes of action. Despite being hampered by foul trouble, Daye made important plays for Venezia when he was on the floor. Mitchell Watt added 13 points of his own. A lot more of Venezia’s players contributed in varying degrees throughout the contest.

In stark contrast, Avellino’s firepower lay in the hands of three key players. Kyrylo Fesenko led Avellino with 19 points, while Dezmine Wells and Jason Rich added 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Venezia now has the comfort of an 8-point cushion as they head home and look to close out the FIBA Europe Cup Finals in convincing fashion.
