Iberostar Tenerife wins 2017 Intercontinental Cup
Spain’s Iberostar Tenerife CB Canarias reigned supreme in the finals of the 2017 Intercontinental Cup, defeating a tough opponent in Venezuela’s Guaros de Lara, 76-71. The event, sponsored by FIBA, was a big success and fans of international basketball were treated to some amazing hoops. Iberostar Tenerife has been on a fantastic ride, since winning the FIBA Basketball Champions League in April, they have retained their momentum and are looking at an impressive start for the 2017-18 season, both in the Spanish ACB and in other international competitions.
Iberostar’s Mike Tobey led the way with a team-high 21 points. He also added nine rebounds to his performance, securing him the Most Valuable Player award.
The yellow shirts had an excellent mix of offense and defense in this game. Their shots from downtown were finding their mark and their defense was on point when it came to stymying rallies mounted by Guaros de Lara.
On their end, Guaros de Lara put up a good fight. Mario Little finished the final with a game-high 23 points. Guaros took control of the game early but Tenerife would strike back in the second frame. By the third quarter, Iberostar managed to cut into the lead and reduced it to 48-43.
When the fourth quarter came around, Iberostar knocked down key shots from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line to pull ahead. Despite the best efforts of an energized Guaros squad, Tenerife’s defense allowed them to hold on for the win.
