NCAA: Tournament Results, Round 3, Day 2
What Day 1 of Round 3 of the NCAA Tournament provided in upsets, Day 2 gave the March Madness faithful in close contests, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer and a driving layup, both of which were game winners. The day’s contests did also include the story of the tournament, South No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast University picking off their second higher seeded club, No. 7 San Diego State University, 81:71. FGCU is the first No. 15 seed to make it to the Sweet 16 and will next face in-state rival, No. 3 Florida on Friday. The other hot topic of the day was West No. 13 La Salle, who had to play-in to get to the second round, won their third game of the Tournament, beating No. 12 Ole Miss, 76:74, a game that ended on a Tryone Garland driving layup with 2.1 seconds remaining. La Salle’s trip to the Sweet 16 has included a Round 1 win over Boise State, 80:71, a Round 2 win over No. 4 Kansas State, 63:61, and Sunday’s win over Ole Miss. The Explorers will next square off against No. 9 Wichita State, who just knocked of the No. 1 ranked team in the country, the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
In other games West No. 2 Ohio State was taken to the wire by No. 10 Iowa State, but a three-pointer with 0.5 seconds remaining by Aaron Craft for a 78:75 win will advance the Buckeyes to the Sweet 16; East No. 1 Indiana trailed No. 9 Temple for the better part of the contest, but got the lead with 1:13 to play and held on for a 58:52 win; South No. 1 Kansas dominated No. 8 University of North Carolina, 70:58; South No. 3 Florida opened up a 21-point lead at the half against No. 11 Minnesota, then let that lead shrink to seven, before finally winning by 14, 78:64; East No. 2 Miami trailed Illinois with just over a minute to play, but a key triple and shooting six for six at the line earned them a 65:59 win; Midwest No. 2 Duke got the lead in their contest with No. 7 Creighton with four minutes off the clock and never gave it up on their way to a 66:50 victory.
