Malvin crowned Uruguayan champs
Malvin Montevideo displayed their dominance over the Uruguayan LUB this season by clinching the league title for the third time. The franchise has been the best team in the competition this campaign and drove that fact home with an emphatic 4-1 series win over Defensor Sporting.
Victory in this season’s league makes Malvin the most successful in the eleven year history of the LUB, and it was perhaps a fitting final and result. After-all it was these two teams who proved the best during the Regular Season with Sporting finishing second with a 11-3 record, and Malvin winning the season in first place with a 12-2 record.
Both clubs had made easy work of the play-off stage, but in the best of seven finals series Malvin proved to have more class. Game five proved decisive as Malvin came through a tough game to win 73-69 and once again become champions of Uruguay.
Bruno Fitipaldo paced Malvin with 15 points, but Mathias Calfani’s 13 points and 6 rebounds proved just as pivotal in success. Ruben Garces gave Sporting Defensor a solid base to try to turn the series around by claiming a game high 22 points, but ultimately it was not enough.
