Lietkabelis Wins Baltic League Bronze
Lithuanian club Panevezys Lietkabelis has bagged the Bronze medal in Baltic League after defeating Latvian opponent, Valmiera/ORDO 86-64. The hosts had a lot riding on this game after blazed to a 90-74 victory in the first game of the series. Lietkabelis came to this game prepared and ready for action.
Lietkabelis gained the early advantage by climbing 15-8 early in the first quarter. A 7-0 run by Valmiera quashed their lead as the pace stabilized. Lietkabelis continued their assault in the second frame and closed out the first half with a 47-37 lead.
After the halftime break, the hosts managed to remain in the driver’s seat, much to the delight of their fans watching at Panevezys. They managed to stretch their lead as much as 17 points in the third frame. A good push by the Latvian squad brought it back down to a more manageable 52-63 score, heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The fourth period was key for Lietkabelis as they pushed the tempo and rallied for a 21-point lead with five minutes left in regulation. This was the cushion they needed for a better aggregate score and allowing them to capture the Bronze medal in the competition.
Valdas Vasylius of Lietkabelis led all scorers with his double-double performance of 17 points and 10 rebounds. He was one of six Lietkabelis players to score in double figures. Kwamain Mitchell paced Valmiera with 14 points.
Game 2 of the Finals series between Siauliai and TU/Rock is set to get underway tonight. Rock took Game 1, 74-81. Will Siauliai be able to bounce back?
