Legs Sweep Mega Mix; Hawks Repeat As Junior Champs
Hopes of a competitive senior division basketball championship series between defending champs, Legs and Mega Mix were quickly erased as Legs completed a three game sweep in the best of five series.
Mega Mixs coach, Verne ‘Vego Turnbull promised to devise a game plan to counter the potent Legs offense following their season loss, while Legs’ Kennedy Bass had stated that this season his team would let their play do the talking on the court.
Legs finished with the title and an unbeaten record led by Jasin Edwin, who was awarded the Most Valuable Player. Legs capped their impressive season with a 118-79 clubbing of Mega Mix. Khalid Gerard finished with a game-high 32 points for Leg. He also grabbed 5 rebounds and picked off 4 steals.
Younger Legs players, Dione Blyden and Deon Edwin contributed with 19 and 14 points respectively. Gary Hilhouse scored 15 points for the champions.
Devon Watty scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for Mega Mix. He was supported by Halstead ‘JR Chiverton with 15 points; Nathaniel Malone, 12 points and 9 rebounds; and Tevon Phillip, 10 points.
In the Junior division, Javier Martinez led all scorers with 24 points and doubled with 10 rebounds as the defending champs, Hawks piled on 24 points in the first quarter and 31 in the third quarter to clinch their best of five series, 89-70 and retain the crown on Sunday.
Ryan Alfred (95) added 23 points, Shakiel Humphrey (95) finished with 17 points and Keita Jones had 11 points all for the Hawks.
On the other side of the floor, Deshawn Creque and Michael Benjamin each finished with 14 points for Young Gunners. Shem Samuel and Ashield Frett ended with 13 and 12 points respectively.
Meanwhile, VG-Heats picked up the D-League championship.
