Injured Clippers Star Kawhi Leonard Now Plays Five-on-Five
Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard is now playing five-on-five in team practices.
Kawhi Leonard Could Make His Return Soon
It has been a long while but Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard could be making his return sooner than later. Clippers head coach Ty Lue recently mentioned that Kawhi is actually playing five-on-five basketball already, which is a very positive development for the recovery of the injured Clippers star. Kawhi has only played two games this season, as he’s still recovering from knee issues that have been hindering him from reaching his optimal basketball shape.
Of course, it’s very difficult to gauge the exact date of Kawhi’s return to an official NBA game. It was just a week ago when Lue said that the two-time Finals MVP is “progressing well” in his recovery. We were doubtful of that update, but Kawhi playing five-on-five — whether it is with Clippers teammates or assistant coaches and trainers — is already a big step forward.
Despite their main star logging only two games so far, the Clippers are actually doing well as a team. They are sporting a decent record of seven wins against six defeats, which is good for the 8th spot in the Western Conference standings. Their team defense has been stellar, as they are currently ranked third in defensive rating (108.5). That defense will tighten up even more when they get Kawhi Leonard back, who is one of the best wing defenders in the league.
Kawhi is in his third season with the Clippers, having redshirted the previous year due to an ACL injury. Through two games this season, the two-way wing logged 21 minutes per contest, averaging 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals.
