Icelandic Cup goes back to KR Reykjavik
KR Reykjavik clinched the Icelandic Cup thanks to a 78-71 success over Thor Thorl in the final. This win continued the club’s recent dominance over Basketball in Iceland. Indeed, this was a second consecutive Icelandic Cup title for KR Reykjavik and its 13th overall.
The reigning league champions have been in fantastic form this season and is currently topping the regular season standings with a 13-3 record. The club has won the last three Iceland league titles and is chasing a four peat.
Thor Thorl managed to secure an early lead in this contest and was winning 16-18 as the buzzer sounded to close the first quarter. In the second frame, the champs started to work the bucket and clawed its way to a 35-34 advantage through the long break. In the second half, KR started on fire and shot to a 26-12 run in the third act, enough to carry a 15-point lead through thirty minutes (61-46). The holders saw out the game in professional fashion, despite a brief rally from Thor Thorl.
P.J. Alawoya was excellent in the win as he grabbed a double-double of 23 points and 18 rebounds. Jon Stefansson was good for 19 points, while Pavel Ermolinskij also doubled up with 10 points and 11 boards.
Tobin Carberry was the best player on the hardwood and pushed the losing effort with a game-high 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists. Emil Einarsson scored 15 points.
