Groningen Repeat as Dutch Eredivisie Champions
Donar Groningen stays on top as the 2018 Dutch Eredivisie Champions. They convincingly completed a series sweep of Zorg and Zekerheid Leiden with a 66-73 win in Game 4 on Tuesday night. The club continues to dominate the Dutch League and much credit goes to 2017 coach of the year Erik Braal for orchestrating yet another successful season.
The guests came in wanting to close out the series and even without having the homecourt advantage, the defending champions came to play. And play hard they did. They rushed to an early 22-13 lead in the first quarter and despite Leiden’s best efforts, were able to hold onto the lead and secure the win.
Groningen put up an impressive all-around team effort. Their reserves outscored Leiden’s 18-8, keeping up the offensive pressure at full steam all game long.
Groningen’s Brandyn Curry set the tempo with a 20-5-5 line and committed only one turnover. Sean Cunningham added 16 points, while Jason Dourisseau flirted with a double-double as he dropped nine points and 10 boards.
What’s next for Groningen come 2018-19? Is this the beginning of a dynasty in the Dutch League or will another team rise up to claim the throne?
