Greek A1 Regular Season Round 16
Panathinaikos Athens continued to maintain its iron-like grip on the Greek A1 standings through Round 16 of the competition. The runaway league leaders G.Larissa-Faros in comfortable fashion to enhance its position at the top. Arch-rival and biggest title threat Olympiacos Piraeus played on Tuesday and crushed Trikalla on the road. Lavrio, AEK Athens, and Promitheus had mixed fortunes as the teams in the chasing pack behind the Greek A1 giants.
Panathinaikos crushed Larissa-Faros 103-70 in the Greek capital to extend its record at the top of the standings to 16-0. An unbeaten season remains a real possibility for The Greens, who are four games ahead of Olympiacos. The hosts were blistering from beyond the arc, draining 13 triples and recording a 59.1 percentage. It was a blazing home win for the club hunting its first Greek A1 title in four years.
As for great rival Olympiacos, the reigning three-peat champions stayed as Panathinaikos’ nearest challenger with a comfortable 73-98 road win over Trikalla. Once again the gulf in class between the dominant Greek teams and the rest of the league was evident this week. Olympiacos has been slightly more vulnerable this season, but there was no sign of weakness on Tuesday. The win moves the club to 12-4 in the standings.
Three teams continues to make up the chasing pack with a 10-6 record. However, it could have been better for Lavrio this week. The club missed the chance to take sole possession of third place after an 80-69 loss at Aris Thessaloniki. The loss allowed AEK Athens to join Lavrio in third with an exciting 90-95 win over Cretan Kings. Promitheus was also able to move alongside Lavrio with a 69-58 home win over Panionios.
