Greek A1: Olympiacos still dominant at 9-0
The Greek A1 league is currently being dominated by Olympiacos S.F.P Pireus. The club is on a monstrous run to start the season. They remain undefeated in domestic league action at 9-0. They recently downed Aries Trikalla BC, 60-81. Two other clubs have also set themselves apart from the rest of the league. AEK Athens and Panathinaikos Athens have identical 8-1 records and are hot on the heels of Olympiacos. After Top 3, team records drop significantly. AGOR, PAOK, Aris round out top six, but these three clubs are at 5-4 and form a clear pack of middle teams, with three others sporting 4-5 slates. Competition for those slots will be hard fought, while the Top 3 teams remain comfortable with their impressive records.
On to the league leader’s game. Olympiacos came, they saw, they conquered. The guests rushed to a 14-18 advantage at the end of the first period as both teams got off to a slow start. Olympiacos got into their groove and turned up the heat in the second frame and did not look back. At the end of the first half the score stood at 29-48 in favor of the Titans of the Greek A1. From there the second half saw the Olympiacos turn on cruise control as they headed to their easy win on the road.
Trikalla hit more triples than their guests, but Olympiacos dominated the paint and their scoring and rebounding advantage was evident throughout the contest. Ioannis Athineou dropped a game-high 23 points to carry Olympiacos to victory. Stylianos Pouliantis and Mike Caffey paced Trikalla with 12 points apiece.
