Gonzaga rises to the top of the NCAA rankings
As the last remaining team in Division I to taste defeat, the Gonzaga Bulldogs have risen to the top of the NCAA basketball rankings. This is only the second time the “Zags” have been ranked number one. The last time was in 2013. They are the fifth team to be voted as the #1 team. Duke, Kentucky, Villanova, and Baylor previously claimed that honor this season.
“We’ve done it before,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. “You have to understand the only poll we want to be No.1 at is the one at the end of the year. These things just kind of track who’s winning and who’s losing. I will say as we get deeper into the season, the polls get more accurate because everybody begins to get a feel for everyone’s schedule.”
The last couple of weeks have been dominated by Villanova, but their upset loss to Marquette doomed their reign at the top. Nova slides down to #4. Villanova is set to get back on track as they face Providence.
The game to watch this week is a clash between #2 Baylor and #3 Kansas. Baylor is 20-1 and hungry for more wins. Kansas has been hot and their 19-2 record is proof that they are the team to beat in the Big 12. That said, Baylor is dangerous and can prove to be the impenetrable wall that stops Kansas’ unstoppable force. Either way, one of these teams will get knocked down a peg or two in the rankings after this epic game. Expect a small taste of the March Madness that’s headed our way soon enough.
