FIBA World Cup Quarterfinals matchups set
After some exciting basketball action on Monday night, the 2019 FIBA World Cup quarterfinals matchups are now officially set.
Australia successfully completed a come-from-behind, 98-100 win over France to emerge as the top team to come out of Group L with a perfect 5-0 record.
The game was an epic back-and-forth battle, but Patty Mills swiped a clutch steal late in the game and locked up the victory for the Boomers. The sharp-shooting guard led Australia with 30 points, three assists and three 3-pointers. Joe Ingles chimed in with 23 points of his own and Aron Baynes was a force in the paint with 26 point and five rebounds to his name.
Evan Fournier’s game-high 31 points were unfortunately not enough for the French this time around. He got lots of help from Nando De Colo who added 26 points.
France now has the unsavory matchup of Team USA in the quarterfinals, while Australia is set to face off against the Czech Republic.
Team USA knocked out Brazil after recording their fifth win in the tournament, 89-73. This was an intensely emotional game, as you’d expect. Even Brazil’s coach, Vitor Benite was ejected after incurring two technical fouls.
Marcus Smart and Myles Turner played well for USA Basketball. Turner delivered in spades as he put up 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals while going 8-for-11 from the field.
They played without Jayson Tatum, who is still recovering from a sprained ankle. His availability for the quarterfinal game vs. France is in question, but the injury does not appear to be serious.
The Czech Republic lost to Greece 77-84, but their Cinderella story through the tournament continues as they book a date vs. Australia in the quarterfinals of the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
