Fenerbahce Ulker stunned by Usak in TBL
There were three games played on December 7th in Round 9 of the regular season in the Turkish Basketball League (TBL). All home teams were able to notch wins, despite some tough competition from visiting clubs. Arguably one of the most critical games of the round, overall, was between Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul and Usak Sportif. Usak defended their home court with some strong play for the whole game to upset league powerhouse Fenerbahce Ulker, 78-69. This was only the second loss for the Fenerbahce Ulker, but it was enough for them to lose their top position in the league standings. Despite sharing the same 7-2 record, Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul now currently occupies the top spot. Usak now climbs to the 10th place in the standings with their 4-5 slate. The result can attributed to Usak’s starters playing excellent ball. They outplayed Fenerbahce Ulker throughout most of the game. They led through the first three quarters of the game and were in the driver’s seat. They held off Fenerbahce Ulker’s last push in the fourth quarter with solid defense. The trio of Chris Warren, Justin Carter, and Courtney Fells carried Usak, scoring 20, 19, and 18 points respectively. Nemanja Bjelica was the top performer for Fenerbahce Ulker. He posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards.
Banvit Basketbol Kulubu edged out Anadolu Efes Istanbul 76-74. This resulted in both teams having identical 6-3 records. Anadolu slides down to fifth place, while Banvit takes the sixth position.
Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul got back to their winning ways and held off Royal Hali Gaziantep 80-74 to lead all teams with 6-3 records and are now in third place. Royal Hali is still searching for answers to address their poor start this season. They are currently 14th in the league and have managed to claim only three wins in nine games.
