Fenerbahce Dogus secures Turkish Super Cup

Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul maintained its recent run of glittering success by conquering the Turkish President’s Cup with a 75-64 victory over Banvit Bandirma. The win was comfortable for the current Turkish Basketball League champs as they proved too strong for last season’s Turkish Cup winners.

Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul will get its EuroLeague title defence underway next week, while the Turkish league tips off this weekend. The club has enjoyed a solid pre-season, and capped it with the President’s Cup.

It was Fener’s seventh victory in the Turkish Super Cup and prevented Banvit from winning its first. The EuroLeague champs looked in control for long spells, including the first quarter, where a 19-11 run handed the team a convinving lead through 10 minutes. Banvit improved in the second frame, but Fenerbahce stayed a step ahead with a 20-17 run.

Through the long break the champs led by 11 points, the scoreboard reading 39-28. Banvit was in the game, but could not muscle past Fener’s all-round game, allowing the Istanbul team a 21-20 third act and a 60-48 advantage through the long break. Banvit finally won a frame in the fourth, taking the period 16-15, but ultimately it was not enough to stop the Fenerbahce celebrations.

Jan Vesely top scored for the winners with 18 points, while Luigi Datome secured 14 points. Konstantinos Sloukas drained 13 points in success, followed by Brad Wanamaker with 11 points.

Angelo Caloiaro poured in 15 points in the losing effort, while Gasper Vidmar and Jake Odum secured 10 points apiece for Banvit.
