European Basketball weekend roundup
It was another busy week of European Basketball. After the mid-week excitement of the various continental competitions, it was time for domestic leagues to take centre stage once again. Looking across the map of European Basketball, there was plenty of action and drama as the Regular Season kicks into full swing.
Spain
In Spain, surprise package Fuenlabrada relinquished its unbeaten record (5-1) in a 65-73 home loss at the hands of Obradoiro. That loss allowed Real Madrid to swoop to the top of the standings with a 96-100 road win over Burgos. This win means Los Blancos remains the only club with a 100% record through six rounds (6-0.) Elsewhere, Barcelona (4-2) lost a 94-97 thriller against Murcia (3-3), reigning ACB champs Valencia (5-1) beat Gran Canaria 89-83 (4-2), and EuroCup champs Unicaja Malaga (4-2) downed Estudiantes 89-70.
Italy
Two clubs remained untouched in Serie A this season. Germani Brescia (5-0) stayed top with a 68-78 win over New Basket Brindisi (0-5), while Umana Venezia (5-0) stopped Virtus Bologna (3-2) 87-88 in a nail-biting road success. Reigning double champs and EuroLeague competitors Milan (4-1) were thumped 90-69 away at Banco di Sardegna Sassari (3-2) to pick up its first loss of the European Basketball domestic season.
Greece
Panathinaikos Athens will play on Monday in a bid to extend its unbeaten record and position on top of the Greek A1 standings. The Greens will beat fellow unbeaten club Promitheus in a clash where something has to give. In the meantime, it was a chance for Olympiacos Piraeus (3-1), riding a loss from last week, to put pressure on its great rival. The former EuroLeague champ did that with a cruising 55-80 road win over Aris Thessaloniki (2-1).
