Euroleague to investigate Kaunas incident
Euroleague Basketball is investigating an incident that reportedly happened after yesterday’s game between Spanish giants Real Madrid and Lithuanian powerhouse Zalgiris Kaunas. The Thursday night game went to overtime with Madrid securing a 105-104 victory in the home of Zalgiris, but the Spanish team has reported incidents of fan aggression after the game to Euroleague Basketball.
The game went by largely without incident and the win kept Real Madrid at the top of Group E of the Euroleague. However, the club has reported that it was the victim of fan aggression after the buzzer and is now preparing the required documentation concerning the alleged problem. Madrid says that Zalgiris fans conducted aggressive behaviour against Spanish small forward Rudy Fernandez. The aggression is reported to have taken place when the team boarded their bus after the game.
As a part of its investigation into the incident, Euroleague Basketball has asked Zalgiris to provide its own official accounts of the events, while the club will also reveal details about its security arrangements on the night. The Kaunas police will also provide a report which will then be shown to the Euroleague Basketball Disciplinary Judge along with the accounts of both teams. The full incident will then be investigated from all angles and any action will be taken.
