EuroBasket 2017: Quarterfinals set on Sunday
There are just eight teams remaining at EuroBasket 2017 closed its round of 16 on Sunday. Slovenia, Germany, Italy, and Greece took their places in the Quarterfinals on Saturday and were joined by Spain, Latvia, Russia and Serbia after four contests on Sunday.
Looking ahead, the Quarterfinals at EuroBasket 2017 will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, deciding which nations progress to the final four and medal games.
Reigning champs Spain used a 73-56 win to see off Turkey on Sunday. Spain started hot with a 19-10 first quarter, but Turkey slowed down the scoring pace and the board read 25-33 at halftime. The Turkish team kept the momentum in the third and got to 43-49, before Spain found top gear with a game-winning 24-13 charge in the fourth act.
Latvia dominated Montenegro and used a 100-68 win to ease into the last eight. The Latvians exploded from the tip off with 27 points and a 12 point lead after ten minutes. By the long break, the score was 53-34. Latvia continued to dominated and wrapped the game with a 29-15 run in the third act, before shutting g down in the fourth. Janis Timma topped the win with 21 points.
Russia also broken a century of points with a 78-101 demolition over a dangerous Croatia team. Those expecting a close game were treated to. 23-25 first act that handed Russia a slender lead. From there, the Russians controlled with blitzing offensive plays. Alexey Shved was a consistent architect in attack with a double-double of 27 points and 13 assists.
The closest game on Sunday saw Serbia edge Hungary 86-78 to stay in the hunt for EuroBasket 2017. A 24-16 first act gave Serbia control. Hungary picked it up with 25 points in the second quarter, but Serbia managed another 23 to stay 7 in front. A 21-13 third act gave Serbia a 16 point lead with ten minutes to play. It was enough to weather a Hungary rally in the fourth quarter.
