Estudiantes claim trophy over Madrid
Estudiantes came out victorious against their more illustrious city neighbours Real Madrid to clinch the pre-season Albacete tournament after a 76-74 win. It was a Real side missing some of its key men who have been at the FIBA World Cup 2014, but any Los Blancos team is classy, so Estudiantes will take confidence from the win into the new season.
Real took the early advantage, outpacing their derby rivals through the first frame to lead 18-16 after ten minutes of the game. The giants extended their lead by a point as the teams traded through the second quarter, taking a 36-33 lead into halftime. In the third stanza the teams once again went bucket for bucket, but in the fourth Estudiantes erupted to score 26 points. Nacho Martin was the hero as he sent home a game winning triple late on.
Martin led the Estudiantes victory with 19 points, while Javier Salgado and Josep Ortega grabbed 12 points apiece.
Jaycee Carroll paced Los Blancos with 17 points, followed by Andres Rico and Salah Mejri with 10 points each.
