Electra Tel-Aviv downs Haifa to stay top
Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv once again staked a claim for the Israeli Winner League´s Regular Season crown by defeating Maccabi Haifa 74-59 at home. This was of course a clash between Tel-Aviv, the powerhouse of Israeli Basketball and Haifa, the team that shocked many to win the Winner League crown last season.
While Electra Tel-Aviv is focused on the Euroleague Final Four, the club has been doing well domestically too and is currently ranked 1st in the league. It has been another strong season for Haifa and the team went into the game ranked third and with the plan of cutting the gap on Tel-Aviv. The current champs headed into the game on a three game winning streak, but that mini run was snapped by an Electra team that extended its own run to three games.
The hosts controlled this Round 29 encounter from start to finish, taking the lead in the early exchanges and never looking back. Electra Tel-Aviv scraped through the first quarter chased by Haifa, but the former Euroleague champs still held for an 18-15 lead after 10 minutes. A low scoring second frame allowed the home team to pull away from the visitors and by halftime the board read 34-26. The second quarter had done the damage and despite a renewed effort from Haifa, Tel-Aviv won the third stanza too, taking the score to 56-46 after 30 minutes. The double digit lead was too much for Haifa to overcome as Electra Tel-Aviv strolled to the win.
