Crvena Zvezda Four-peat as KLS Champions
Crvena Zvezda “Red Star” Beograd swept FMP in three games in the finals series to win the 2018 Serbian KLS championship. This their fourth straight domestic title. They may have lost out on the ABA League championship, but retaining the domestic crown should at least allow them to end 2017-18 on a high note.
They completed the sweep with a 97-88 win in Game 3 of the series. With their backs to the wall, FMP came out and played aggressively. The guests ended the first period with a five-point advantage (21-26). Unfortunately, their lead would not last long as the defending champions stormed out in the second frame to seize control of the game, and mounted a 56-47 lead by halftime.
After the break, the Red Star held on thanks to some of their notably tenacious defense. From there, it was a matter of not messing up and committing unforced errors. The red and white shirts would hold on for the win.
Crvena Zvezda used superior ball movement and unselfish play to set the stage for their success. Six of their players would score in double figures in the game. Alen Omic led them with 20 points, while Filip Covic chipped in with a double-double performance with 13 points and 10 assists.
Red Star has a bright future ahead. They have built on their success, season by season, thanks to a trusted system, a group of players dedicated to the team and its philosophy, and a fan base that is one of the loudest and most supportive in all of Europe. Crvena Zvezda have come a long way and their commitment continues to pay off dividends.
