Crvena Zvezda Belgrade hits 20-0 in ABA
Crvena Zvezda Belgrade (Red Star Belgrade) continued to dominate the Adriatic League over the weekend with an emphatic victory at the expense of mid-table Szolnoki Olaj. The Serbian giant has been in scintillating form throughout the campaign and crushed the Hungarian visitors 90-47 in Belgrade. The victory means the Red Star club now stretches its record to 20-0 in the Adriatic League this season, an enviable unbeaten record that is close to troubling the record books.
The omens were good heading into this contest as Crvena Zvezda had never lost to the Olaj club in the Adriatic League, boasting a 5-0 record that now stretches to 6-0. The fact that the Serbian club was able to crush a team that is only seven places lower in the standings was telling; the Belgrade club is in dominant form.
Crvena Zvezda Belgrade controlled the paint from the tip off, at both ends of the hardwood too, dominating Szolnoki off the glass (39-21 defensive rebounds, 13-6 offensive rebounds). There was no player from the hosts blitzing the bucket, although the team effort was impressive with seven players putting double figures on the scoreboard for the winners. Maik Zirbes led the way with 13 points followed by Nikola Rebic (12 points, 6 boards), Marko Tejic (11 points, 7 rebounds), followed by four players with 10 points.
Next up for Crvena Zvezda Belgrade is a road trip to Krka Nova Mesto, a club that recorded its fourth consecutive victory over the weekend. Krka will surely put the twenty game unbeaten record under threat with home court advantage, but Red Star is flying at the moment and who would bet against 21-0?
