Caribebasket: Bahamas and Cuba into final
Day 4 of the Caribebasket (CBC Championship) settled which teams would advance to the final, while the lower finishing positions remain undecided. The Bahamas progressed to the final and will be joined by Cuba in the showpiece event on Saturday night. Barbados and Guyana were the other winners on the day.
Semifinals
British Virgin Islands vs. Bahamas, 65-84
The Bahamas is the most decorated country in Caribebasket history with six titles and the team halted the march of 2014 CBC Championship hosts the British Virgin Islands. A pacey opening quarter saw both teams trading baskets through the 10 minutes until the score was locked at 20-20 at the first break. The Bahamas slowly pulled away in the second frame, opening a 10 point + cushion thanks to an 18-8 run and never looking back.
Cuba vs. US Virgin Islands, 62-60
Cuba ended the US Virgin Islands’ defence of the Caribebasket title as the reigning champions crashed out. The Cubans only narrowly managed to do it though as Jasiel Rivero scored 19 points for the winners overall and was important as they opened a 20-8 lead in the first. However, the US Virgin Islands raced back into the game and it proved to be a nervy fourth quarter as the Islanders made the Cuba players work hard for the win.
The Bahamas and Cuba will now play for the title, while both teams booked their place in the 2014 Centrobasket tournament.
