Canada Advances in Fifth Window of FIBA World Cup Qualifiers
Just in the nick of time, Canada has become the last team to punch its ticket in the fifth window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers after an impressive 67-94 win over Brazil in Sao Paolo. It was a must-win game as both nations were tied at 7-2, with the victor being able to secure its seat to the games in China in 2019.
This is a special win for the red shirts as this will be their first entry into the FIBA World Cup in over a decade. Kyle Wiltjer paced the Canadian squad with a game-high 25 points along with seven rebounds.
“It’s been a long time since this country has had a chance to be back on the world stage,” said veteran centre Joel Anthony. “I remember when we qualified the last time and just a really proud feeling to be able to be back and see us get back there.
“To be able to be a part of it is extremely special to me. I’m just really happy, grateful, thankful and excited that we’re able to be back where we belong.”
They join the USA, Venezuela, and Argentina as the only teams from the Americas qualifiers already assured of finishing in the top-3 of their respective groups.
